About

My name is Derek Hill. I’m an American abroad currently living in Athens, GA. I’m also a writer, and a film & book reviewer.

Currently I’m working on a book about director Terry Gilliam for Schaffner Press.  I am also editing Peter Jackson: Interviews for the University Press of Mississippi’s Conversations with Filmmakers series.

In May 2008, my first book, Charlie Kaufman and Hollywood’s Merry Band of Pranksters, Fabulists and Dreamers, was published by Kamera Books.  It’s a study of contemporary (mostly) American filmmakers Richard Linklater, David O. Russell, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Spike Jonze, and Michel Gondry. There are a few other surprises inside, as well.

My writing has also appeared in numerous print and online publications, such as The Third Alternative, VideoScope, Mystery Scene, Video Watchdog, Images: A Journal of Film and Popular Culture, and All Movie (previously The All Movie Guide). I was also a contributor to the three volume Greenwood Press Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy (I wrote about the Planet of the Apes film series and Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and the forthcoming Cutting Edge, edited by Jay Slater, which is a collection of essays on the seminal, non-traditional horror films of our times (mine being on Gaspar Noe’s Seul contre tous).
